Nuwara Wewa Lake

Overview

Nuwara Wewa is the largest of the three great ancient tanks of Anuradhapura, covering approximately 1,200 hectares in the eastern quarter of the city. Created in approximately the 20 BCE by King Kutakannatissa, it remains an active agricultural irrigation reservoir and one of the finest birdwatching sites in the North Central Province. The tank’s sheer scale — it takes over an hour to walk along its northern bund — creates a quality of vast open-water landscape rarely encountered in Sri Lanka outside the truly large reservoirs. The margins support enormous populations of waterbirds, and the morning light on the still water with the surrounding dry zone scrub and occasional stupa visible in the distance creates a landscape of considerable beauty. The tank is less visited by tourists than Tissa Wewa, giving it a more authentic, local character.
