Overview
Mihiripenna Beach is a long, unspoiled stretch of coastline south of Unawatuna, forming a continuation of the same southern shoreline before it turns east toward Thalpe and Koggala. The beach is wider and more exposed than the protected Unawatuna bay, with the open Indian Ocean producing a more energetic wave action that makes swimming dependent on conditions and season. The defining characteristic of Mihiripenna is its undeveloped natural beauty — minimal tourist infrastructure, local fishing boats along the shore, stilt fishermen occasionally working the shallow water, and the long sweep of empty sand stretching in both directions. The beach is particularly beautiful in the early morning when the east-facing sections catch the first light, and the stilt fishermen — if present — create one of Sri Lanka’s most distinctive and photographic coastal scenes.
