Overview
The Matara Lighthouse stands on a low promontory near the seafront, serving as one of the active navigational lighthouses along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The lighthouse is a white-painted structure of modest height — considerably smaller than the Dondra lighthouse nearby, which is the tallest in Sri Lanka — but its position on the open seafront, its colonial-era engineering, and its role as an active navigation aid give it a satisfying presence. The view from the lighthouse vicinity takes in the open Indian Ocean horizon, the Matara beach arc, and the distant headlands of the southern coastline. As a working lighthouse, the interior is not generally open to the public, but the surrounding area is pleasant for coastal walks and the lighthouse makes a classic photography subject in the late afternoon when the western light falls along the whitewashed walls.
