Overview

Mulkirigala Rock Temple is one of the most dramatic and least-visited temple complexes in the Southern Province — a series of five cave temples and open-air shrines built into a series of granite rock ledges rising 205 metres above the surrounding jungle, about 16 kilometres north of Tangalle. The temple complex dates to at least the 2nd century BCE, with its most significant period of artistic development occurring during the Kandyan era when the cave interiors were decorated with murals depicting Buddhist cosmology and royal patronage. The climb to the upper temples passes through five levels of cave shrines, each containing reclining and seated Buddha figures and painted walls of varying quality and age, before reaching the summit dagoba with its magnificent panoramic view across the dry zone landscape to the south coast. The setting and the climb are as significant as the temples themselves.
