Victoria Reservoir Viewpoints

Overview

Victoria Reservoir is one of Sri Lanka’s largest and most beautiful reservoirs, created by the Victoria Dam built across the Mahaweli River gorge in the 1980s as part of the Mahaweli Development Programme. The reservoir stretches for kilometres through the mountain valleys northeast of Kandy, its waters flooding former river canyons and paddy fields to create a dramatic inland sea backed by steep forested hills. A series of viewpoints accessible from the roads above the reservoir reveal extraordinary compositions of still blue water, forested ridges, and distant mountain peaks. The Victoria Dam itself is an impressive feat of engineering — a 122-metre-tall double-curvature arch dam that can be viewed from overlooks on both banks. The reservoir is also known for its endemic fish species, its role in the Mahaweli water supply system, and its importance as a recreational destination for Kandy residents. The views from the upper roads in the late afternoon, when the water turns gold and the surrounding hills cast long shadows, are among the finest in the Central Province.
