Overview
Muthurajawela Marsh is one of the largest mangrove wetlands in Sri Lanka, covering approximately 3,078 hectares along the coast north of Negombo. Its name translates roughly as “swamp of never-ending light” in old Sinhala, and the interplay of light, water, and dense mangrove vegetation does indeed create an atmosphere of almost magical luminosity in the early morning hours. The marsh is a critical ecological habitat supporting over 190 bird species, 19 species of mammals, 32 species of reptiles, and 80+ plant species. Boat safaris through the network of mangrove canals are the primary way to explore the marsh, and the experience of gliding silently through tunnels of green mangrove with kingfishers darting ahead and monitor lizards sunning on the banks is one of the most memorable natural experiences in the Western Province. A well-established visitor centre at Dutch Bay provides information, guided tours, and refreshments.
