Overview
Negombo Beach is the first great coastal experience that most international visitors to Sri Lanka encounter, given its location just 8 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport. Stretching for several kilometres along the western coast, the beach is a lively blend of traditional fishing culture and tourist hospitality. Colourful outrigger fishing boats called oruwa line the sand, setting out before dawn and returning with fresh catches by morning. The beach road is animated with guesthouses, seafood restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops catering to a mix of budget backpackers and mid-range beach seekers. The sea here is generally calm and safe for swimming from November to April, and the wide flat beach lends itself perfectly to long evening strolls. Because of its proximity to the airport, Negombo is widely used as a first or last night destination, but its warm ocean, fresh seafood, and authentic fishing village character make it worthy of a longer stay.
