Overview
Negombo Lagoon is a large coastal lagoon stretching approximately 17 kilometres inland from the ocean, separated from the sea by a narrow sand bar through which the Dutch Canal was built. The lagoon is one of the most productive fishing grounds in Sri Lanka and supports dozens of fishing villages whose livelihoods have depended on its waters for generations. Wooden fishing boats, bamboo fish traps, and traditional net fishing create extraordinarily photogenic scenes in the early morning hours. The lagoon is also an important bird habitat, with large numbers of waders, herons, egrets, terns, and occasionally flamingos visiting its shallow margins. Boat safaris through the lagoon offer a wonderful perspective on the fishing villages, the Dutch Canal, and the natural beauty of the mangroves and open water. As the sun sets over the lagoon, the reflections of the boats and the warm light create some of the most memorable natural scenes in the Western Province.
