Overview
The southern edge of the Negombo Lagoon — the massive coastal lagoon north of Colombo accessible from the Hamilton Canal and the Negombo road — provides excellent waterbird birdwatching and the first taste of the extraordinary Negombo lagoon ecosystem accessible from the Colombo direction. The southern lagoon margins are less visited than the main Negombo lagoon boat safari zone but provide a quieter and more intimate encounter with the lagoon ecology. Herons, egrets, painted storks, and kingfishers are reliably present, and the traditional catamaran and outrigger culture of the Negombo fishing fleet is visible along the southern lagoon margins.
