Overview
Wattala is a coastal suburb north of Colombo where the built environment meets the remnant coastal lagoon system of the Kelani River delta — a patchwork of remaining tidal inlets, brackish ponds, and mangrove patches that provide waterbird habitat within the suburban fringe. The Wattala coastal lagoons are not a single defined site but rather a series of water bodies visible from the coastal road and the Hamilton Canal corridor that collectively provide a glimpse of the coastal ecology that once dominated the entire western coastal belt. Fishing communities maintain small operations in these lagoon remnants, and the waterbirds that use the habitat are visible from the road.
