Overview
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s surf capital and one of Asia’s finest point break destinations — a sweeping bay on the southeastern coast whose main break, at the southern tip of the bay, consistently delivers long, clean right-hand waves that have attracted surfers from around the world since the 1960s. The bay is framed by a beautiful arc of sand and coconut palms, with the Indian Ocean delivering the swell that makes the southern point one of the most celebrated wave setups in Asia. Beyond surfing, Arugam Bay has developed a thriving beach tourism culture of relaxed guesthouses, excellent seafood restaurants, yoga studios, and beachside social life that provides a complete beach holiday experience for both surfers and non-surfers. The surrounding landscape — inland safari routes, ancient pilgrimage sites, whale-shark waters, and the Kumana and Lahugala wildlife areas — gives the bay a context of extraordinary natural richness.
