Overview
Bopath Ella is one of the most beautiful and accessible waterfalls in the Sabaragamuwa Province — a 30-metre cascade on the Kuru Ganga river near Ratnapura whose wide fan-shape spreading across a concave rock face resembles the shape of a bo leaf (bodhi leaf), which gives the falls their evocative name. The waterfall is situated in a lush tropical setting of dense vegetation, with the dark rock face framing the white water against a backdrop of green forest. A well-maintained path leads to the base of the falls where a clear pool provides one of the finest natural swimming experiences near Ratnapura, and the surrounding area supports excellent birdwatching in the riverine forest. Bopath Ella is most impressive in the wet season when the full volume of the Kuru Ganga turns the fan-shaped cascade into a thundering wall of white water.
