Overview
Lipton’s Seat is the most celebrated viewpoint in the Haputale area — an elevated hilltop perch at approximately 1,970 metres above sea level where Sir Thomas Lipton, the Scottish tea magnate who built his Ceylon tea fortune from the estates visible in every direction, reportedly sat to survey his vast highland empire. The view from Lipton’s Seat is truly extraordinary: on a clear day, tea estates cover every hillside and ridge within sight, and the horizon extends in four directions to encompass a landscape of mountain ridges, valley mists, and distant lowland plains that is among the finest in all of Sri Lanka. The viewpoint is reached via a scenic drive through the Dambatenne Tea Estate — itself one of the most beautiful driving routes in the Uva Province — past the Dambatenne Tea Factory and up a switchback road to the hilltop, where a simple bench and shelter mark the spot where Lipton watched over his empire.
