Overview

Victoria Park in Nuwara Eliya is a beautifully maintained colonial-era public garden covering approximately 27 acres in the heart of the town, established during the British era and named in honour of Queen Victoria. The park is famous among birdwatchers as a reliable location for several species of migratory birds from Siberia, India, and the Himalayas that spend the northern winter months here — including the Kashmir flycatcher, Indian blue robin, dull-blue flycatcher, and pied thrush. These migratory species join a rich resident bird community including endemic Sri Lankan species that are attracted by the park’s diverse vegetation of English garden flowers, tropical shade trees, and manicured lawns. For non-birders, the park offers a lovely combination of rose gardens, lily ponds, children’s play areas, and picnic lawns that make it one of the most pleasant family gardens in the highlands. The unique horticultural experiment of growing English temperate flowers — roses, delphiniums, cosmos — at tropical highland altitudes continues to produce spectacular seasonal flower displays.
