Coral Reefs Around Pigeon Island Zone

Overview

The coral reef ecosystem surrounding Pigeon Island and extending along the Nilaveli–Kuchchaveli coastal zone is the finest accessible shallow reef system on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast — a complex of hard and soft corals, reef channels, and sandy patches that supports an exceptional diversity of marine life in water of remarkable clarity. Beyond the main Pigeon Island reef, additional coral formations extend northward toward Kuchchaveli, and the variety of reef habitats — from the shallow garden areas of 2–5 metres that are ideal for snorkelling to the deeper walls and bommies accessible to divers — creates a marine landscape that rewards repeated visits at different sites. Blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, pufferfish, lion fish, rays, and hundreds of reef fish species inhabit the reef system.
