Overview
The Pimburattewa wetland area north of Polonnaruwa is a largely unknown birdwatching destination encompassing a complex of ancient tanks, marshes, and paddy land that together form one of the richer waterbird habitats in the North Central Province. The area is not developed for tourism and receives almost no visitors, which means the bird watching experience here — conducted from the roads and tank bunds of a working agricultural landscape — is entirely authentic and unmediated. Large populations of painted storks, black-headed ibis, various herons, and migratory waders use the wetland complex, and elephants occasionally visit the tank margins. The Pimburattewa area represents the landscape of the ancient Rajarata at its most typical: ancient tanks, paddy fields, dry zone forest patches, and the seasonal rhythms of agricultural life.
