Nissanka Latha Mandapaya

Overview

The Nissanka Latha Mandapaya is one of the most visually distinctive and elegant structures in the Polonnaruwa complex — a small ceremonial pavilion built by King Nissankamalla in the late 12th century CE, featuring eight stone columns carved in the form of lotus stems, each with an opening bud at the top, rising from a low platform in a design of extraordinary botanical elegance. The columns — slender, carved to imitate natural lotus stems with their surface texture preserved — support a ceiling that no longer survives, but the effect of the eight stone “lotuses” rising from the platform is complete even as a ruin. An ancient inscription on the site records that Nissankamalla sat here on a golden throne to listen to the chanting of religious texts. The intimate scale and the refined botanical carving make the Nissanka Latha Mandapaya one of the most artistically distinctive single objects in all of Polonnaruwa.
