Overview
Maha Seya Stupa crowns the highest summit of Mihintale at approximately 355 metres above sea level — a white dagoba that can be seen from the plains around Anuradhapura for many kilometres. The stupa is built on the very apex of the mountain and provides, from its surrounding platform, the finest panoramic view of the entire North Central Province landscape: the ancient tanks glinting in the morning light, Anuradhapura’s white domes visible in the western haze, the surrounding dry zone forest stretching to every horizon. The effort of climbing to the Maha Seya — 1,000 steps from the Ambasthala level and 1,843 total from the base — is entirely proportionate to the reward of reaching it. The stupa is a place of active worship and the spiritual intensity at the summit — combining the effort of the climb, the antiquity of the site, and the panoramic landscape — is deeply moving.
