Overview
Thuparamaya holds the distinction of being the first Buddhist stupa ever built in Sri Lanka — a monument of immense historical significance erected in the 3rd century BCE by King Devanampiya Tissa following the introduction of Buddhism to the island by Mahinda, son of Emperor Ashoka. The stupa is relatively modest in scale compared to the giant monuments of the later Anuradhapura period, but its spiritual importance far exceeds its physical dimensions. It is said to enshrine the right collar bone of the Buddha — one of the most sacred corporeal relics in the world. The cylindrical form of the stupa (a vatadage design with a circular enclosure of stone pillars) is one of the earliest examples of this architectural form in Sri Lanka. Standing before Thuparamaya — knowing it is the oldest standing structure in Sri Lanka — creates a quality of historical awe quite distinct from the scale-awe of the larger monuments.
