Overview
Vakarai is a coastal area north of Batticaloa — south of Trincomalee — where a series of quiet, natural beaches provide some of the most completely undiscovered coastal experiences on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. The beaches are wide and natural, backed by coastal vegetation, with clear water and minimal human presence. The area sits in the transition zone between the Trincomalee tourist area to the north and the Batticaloa resort zone to the south, and its position between the two better-known areas has left it in a state of natural preservation that both ends have lost. Vakarai’s beaches are accessible by the coastal road and provide the authentic East Coast beach character that the main resort areas can no longer offer.
