Overview
Valaichchenai is a coastal town north of Batticaloa where a smaller lagoon system provides a quieter and more intimate version of the Batticaloa Lagoon experience. The Valaichchenai Lagoon and its associated mangrove and tidal flat habitats provide excellent waterbird habitat and the traditional lagoon fishing culture that characterises the entire Eastern Province coastal zone. The town and its lagoon are less visited than Batticaloa, giving a more authentic encounter with the coastal community life of the northeast. The lagoon margins and the road bridge crossing provide good photography positions for waterbirds, and informal boat hire is possible for a short lagoon excursion.
