World’s End

Overview

World’s End is the defining natural spectacle of Horton Plains National Park and one of the most dramatically vertiginous viewpoints in Asia — a sheer cliff dropping approximately 870 metres from the edge of the Horton Plains plateau to the lowland plains far below. Standing at the cliff’s edge, the ground simply vanishes beneath your feet and the land falls away in one unbroken sweep to the horizon, where on exceptionally clear days the southern coastline of Sri Lanka — 97 kilometres distant — is visible. The visual impact is staggering regardless of how many photographs you have seen beforehand. The experience is entirely cloud-dependent — the plateau is socked in by mist from mid-morning onwards on most days, and the World’s End view is typically available only in the two to three hours following dawn. This means the Horton Plains experience is fundamentally structured around an early start and a race against the clouds, which adds an element of drama and urgency to every visit.
