Thangamale Sanctuary

Overview

Thangamale Sanctuary is a small but ecologically significant protected forest above Haputale that is one of the finest birdwatching sites in the Uva Province. The sanctuary encompasses a fragment of highland forest in the escarpment zone above the Haputale ridge, harbouring a remarkable concentration of endemic Sri Lankan bird species and providing critical habitat at an elevation where the highland and mid-elevation species overlap. The sanctuary is managed for conservation rather than tourism and receives very few visitors — meaning birdwatching here is done in essentially undisturbed conditions. A guide from Haputale with specific knowledge of the Thangamale bird community can produce an exceptional species list in a single morning visit, with endemic species including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, yellow-eared bulbul, and dull-blue flycatcher reliably encountered.
