Matara Fort

Overview

Matara Fort is a Dutch colonial fortification built in the late 17th century on the peninsula where the Nilwala River meets the Indian Ocean, designed to protect the town and its lucrative spice trade from rivals and local resistance. The fort is substantially less intact than its more famous counterpart at Galle, but it retains significant portions of its original walls, bastions, and gateway structure that give a clear sense of the original Dutch defensive design. The walls enclose a residential quarter that is still inhabited — a functioning neighbourhood within colonial fortifications, where residents go about daily life within walls that have stood for over three centuries. The Old Gate — a beautifully preserved Dutch baroque entrance archway — is the fort’s most impressive surviving architectural element. The nearby Matara Dutch Star Fort (a separate structure) completes the Dutch colonial fortification story.
