Overview
Coconut Tree Hill is a small headland west of Mirissa Beach where a cluster of coconut palms lean dramatically over the Indian Ocean above the crescent bay below, creating one of the most widely reproduced travel photographs in Sri Lanka. The scene — leaning palms framing the arc of Mirissa Beach with turquoise water and golden sand below — appears in tourism imagery and social media feeds worldwide, and the reality more than delivers on the promise of the photographs. The hilltop is small and easily reached by a 5-minute walk from the beach, and the photography opportunities are consistently excellent throughout the day with the bay curving away beneath the leaning palms. Sunset from the hill is particularly spectacular when the entire bay lights up in amber and the silhouettes of the coconut palms become graphic against the coloured sky.
