Wilpattu Northern Buffer Zone Access

Overview

The northern buffer zone of Wilpattu National Park — accessible from the Mannar District approach roads — provides an entry into the vast Wilpattu wilderness from the north that sees considerably fewer visitors than the standard southern entrances near Anuradhapura. The northern approach passes through the dry zone landscape of the Mannar District, entering the forest from a direction that gives a different character to the wildlife experience. The northern buffer zone forms part of the wildlife corridor connecting the Mannar coastal wetlands with the Wilpattu interior, and elephants, leopards, and the full range of Wilpattu’s wildlife use this northern zone. The combination of the Mannar coastal wetlands and the northern Wilpattu forest makes the Mannar District one of the most comprehensively rewarding wildlife zones in northern Sri Lanka.
