Overview

Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is a small but ecologically significant wetland reserve located in the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia area, approximately 10 kilometres south of central Colombo. The sanctuary encompasses shallow marshes, paddy fields, and reed beds that provide critical nesting and feeding habitat for over 60 species of resident and migratory birds. Historically an important agricultural landscape, Attidiya was designated as a protected bird sanctuary in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity value. The site is particularly notable for painted storks, which nest in large colonies in the tall trees above the marsh — one of the most reliable painted stork nesting sites close to any major Asian city. Black-headed ibis, open-billed storks, purple herons, and multiple species of egret and heron are regular visitors. Despite its small size, the sanctuary draws dedicated birdwatchers from across Sri Lanka and international visitors who make it a priority stop on their Colombo birding itinerary.
