Overview

Bolgoda Lake is a large, scenic freshwater lake located approximately 25 kilometres south of Colombo, straddling the Panadura and Moratuwa areas. Covering an estimated 400 hectares across its north and south sections, it is one of the largest natural lakes in the Western Province and provides a beautiful natural backdrop of open water, mangroves, and surrounding paddy fields. The lake is connected to the Indian Ocean via a series of canals and is an important habitat for a wide variety of waterbirds, fish, and aquatic wildlife. Local fishermen cast their nets from traditional wooden boats, creating picturesque scenes at dawn and dusk. Bolgoda has gradually become a popular destination for kayaking, paddleboarding, boat safaris, and waterside dining. A number of small resorts and boutique guesthouses have developed along its banks in recent years, offering a tranquil lakeside retreat within easy reach of Colombo. The combination of natural beauty, water activities, and peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal half-day or overnight escape from the capital.
