Overview
Weligama Turtle Bay is a small, sheltered cove at the eastern end of Weligama Bay where a permanent population of sea turtles inhabits the shallow reef, making it one of the most reliable locations in the Southern Province for close-up turtle encounters without the need for deep-water boats. The turtles feed on the seagrass and algae of the shallow reef and are accustomed to the presence of respectful snorkellers, making unhurried underwater encounters with these ancient creatures possible in conditions accessible to virtually anyone with basic swimming ability. The bay is small and pretty, with rocky headlands, clear water, and a natural quiet that contrasts with the more active surf beach of the main Weligama Bay. A small café or two operate at the cove entrance, and the atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried.
