Overview
Batticaloa Lagoon is one of the largest coastal lagoons in Sri Lanka — a vast, shallow body of brackish water stretching approximately 55 kilometres along the Eastern Province coastline, separated from the Indian Ocean by a narrow strip of land and connected to the sea through multiple channels. The lagoon is the defining geographical feature of Batticaloa District, surrounding the town on three sides and providing the productive fishing environment that has sustained the coastal communities for generations. The lagoon is known throughout Sri Lanka for the legend of the “Singing Fish” — a natural acoustic phenomenon audible on Poya nights when a sound resembling music rises from the lagoon floor, attributed to a species of mussel or fish unique to the Batticaloa waters. Boat trips across the lagoon reveal a beautiful world of still water, water birds, fishing activity, and the characteristic quality of light that has made Batticaloa’s painters and writers lyrical for generations.
