Unnichchai Reservoir

Overview

Unnichchai Reservoir is a large agricultural tank in the Batticaloa District hinterland, providing irrigation water for the surrounding paddy lands and creating a significant bird habitat in the dry zone–coastal transition zone of the Eastern Province. The reservoir’s margins attract substantial waterbird populations including painted storks, herons, and large numbers of migratory ducks and waders in season. The surrounding agricultural landscape of paddy and rubber gives the reservoir a working rural character that is typical of the Batticaloa hinterland. Elephants occasionally visit the reservoir margins from the adjacent forest zones, and the early morning reservoir — misty, still, and full of birds — is one of the finest natural photography subjects in the Batticaloa District.
