Aluvihare Rock Temple

Overview

Aluvihare Rock Temple is one of the most historically significant Buddhist sites in the world, located approximately 3 kilometres north of Matale town on the main road to Kandy. The temple is built within and around a series of natural granite rock outcrops, with shrine rooms, cave chambers, and sitting Buddha statues cut into and constructed around the boulders in a style that reflects centuries of continuous religious use. Its most extraordinary significance is literary rather than architectural — it is here, in the 1st century BCE, that Buddhist monks first committed the Pali Canon (the Theravada Buddhist scriptures, also known as the Tipitaka) to writing. For centuries the scriptures had been preserved in oral tradition alone, but the threat of famine and war persuaded the monks at Aluvihare to inscribe the entire canon onto palm leaves — a project of extraordinary scope that secured the future of Theravada Buddhism. The palm leaf manuscripts remain one of the most important literary achievements in human history. A small museum on site displays examples of these ancient manuscripts.
