Beruwala Beach

Overview

Beruwala is one of the oldest established beach resort areas on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, with a tourist presence stretching back to the early days of the island’s tourism development in the 1970s. The beach sits at the northern end of the Bentota–Beruwala coastal stretch and is characterised by a mix of mid-range and upmarket resort hotels, a calm and generally swimmable sea from November to April, and a fascinating cultural duality — the town itself has a significant Muslim community, the legacy of Arab traders who settled here more than a thousand years ago, making Beruwala one of the first places in Sri Lanka where Islam took root. The Ketchimalai Mosque, perched on a rocky headland above the sea, is one of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka and a prominent landmark visible from the beach. The combination of beach resort infrastructure and authentic cultural heritage makes Beruwala more textured than many of its coastal neighbours.
