Kala Wewa Reservoir

Overview

Kala Wewa is one of the most impressive ancient tanks in Sri Lanka — a vast reservoir created in the 5th century CE by King Dhatusena of Anuradhapura, covering approximately 6,600 hectares and connected to Anuradhapura’s water supply by the extraordinary Jaya Ganga canal, which carries water 54 kilometres at a gradient of just 6 inches per mile — a feat of hydraulic engineering precision that astonishes modern engineers. The tank is not within the main Sacred City circuit and receives relatively few tourists despite its enormous size and historical significance — it is primarily a working agricultural reservoir serving the farming communities of the surrounding district. The bund, the open water, and the surrounding dry zone landscape are beautiful and peaceful, and the scale of the tank — the largest ancient reservoir in Sri Lanka — creates a landscape of unusual grandeur.
