Thelgamu Oya River

Overview

The Thelgamu Oya is a highland river draining the western slopes of the Knuckles Range, flowing through a spectacularly scenic valley in the Matale District before joining the larger river systems of the Central Province. The river passes through a sequence of terrain — highland forest gorges, rural village stretches, paddy field plains, and rock-studded rapids — that creates a varied and photogenic waterway unlike the more famous rivers of the southern highlands. The upper sections of the Thelgamu Oya are known for excellent bird habitat along the riverine forest margins, and the water itself is clear and clean, offering opportunities for wading and swimming in the dry season. The river valley provides excellent kayaking and small-scale rafting in the monsoon months when flow is sufficient, and several local operators in the Knuckles and Matale area offer guided river activities along the Thelgamu Oya system.
