Overview
The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, established in 1821 on the site of a former royal garden of the Kandyan kings, is the finest and most extensive botanical garden in South Asia, covering approximately 147 acres (60 hectares) along a dramatic bend in the Mahaweli River. The gardens contain over 4,000 plant species, including an extraordinary Avenue of Royal Palms that stretches for several hundred metres, a collection of over 300 orchid varieties, a vast fernery, a cactus house, a bamboo forest, an enormous Java fig tree that covers nearly half an acre under its canopy alone, and collections of spice plants, medicinal herbs, and tropical timber trees. The gardens were used as a military hospital and communications centre for Allied forces in Southeast Asia during World War II. They remain a living laboratory for Sri Lanka’s botanical research institutions. The setting — with the wide curve of the Mahaweli River on three sides and the hills of the Central Province rising beyond — is simply magnificent.
