Overview
The deep waters off the Kalpitiya and Puttalam coast lie on the migratory routes of several large whale species that move through the Indian Ocean seasonally, making the northwestern offshore zone an emerging destination for whale watching during the kite surfing season. Blue whales, sperm whales, and Bryde’s whales have all been reported in the offshore waters during the May–October kite season, when the same winds that power the kites on the beach create the upwelling conditions that concentrate marine life offshore. While whale watching off Kalpitiya is less organised and less reliable than the famous operations off Mirissa, the combination of kite surfing, dolphin watching, and occasional whale encounters in the same offshore zone makes the northwestern waters one of Sri Lanka’s most comprehensive marine wildlife destinations.
