Overview
Munneswaram Temple near Chilaw is one of the most ancient and sacred Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, associated with the god Shiva and believed to have been established in the pre-Christian era. According to the Ramayana tradition, Munneswaram was founded by the demon king Ravana himself, making it part of the island’s deepest mythological heritage. The temple complex is large and architecturally impressive, with a gopuram (entrance tower) decorated in colourful South Indian-style sculpture that rises above the surrounding village landscape. The annual festival draws tens of thousands of Hindu and Buddhist devotees from across Sri Lanka, and the temple complex also includes shrines dedicated to other deities. The Munneswaram temple is famous for its fire-walking ceremonies during the festival season — a dramatic and deeply serious devotional practice.
