Coral Gardens (Pigeon Island Zone)

Overview

The coral garden sections of the Pigeon Island zone — the shallow inner reef areas of 2–8 metres depth between the island shores and the sandy seafloor — are among the most accessible and visually rewarding marine environments for snorkellers in Sri Lanka. The coral gardens feature a mosaic of branching staghorn and table corals, brain corals, sea fans, and smaller coral structures that together create a three-dimensional underwater landscape of remarkable colour and biological richness. Schools of reef fish — including parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, and hundreds of smaller species — move through the corals in constant motion, and the blacktip reef sharks patrol the sandy channels at the garden edges. The gardens are at their most beautiful in the low-angle morning light when the coral colours are most saturated and the fish activity is highest.
