Overview
The western coast of Sri Lanka from Hikkaduwa to Kalpitiya provides a sequence of accessible coral reef diving sites that collectively form one of the most varied diving route systems on the island. From the well-established Hikkaduwa Marine Sanctuary (the island’s most visited reef) northward through Beruwala’s offshore patch reefs to the Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary near Kalpitiya, the western diving route offers a progressive journey through reef ecosystems of different depths, species compositions, and accessibility levels. The route is best explored as a multi-destination journey with different dive operators, each providing local expertise on their section of the reef system.
