Overview

The Hamilton Canal is a colonial-era navigable waterway built in the 19th century during British administration, running parallel to the Dutch Canal along the western coast and forming part of the interconnected inland waterway system that stretches from Colombo northward. Named after the British engineer who oversaw its construction, the canal passes through fishing villages, rice paddies, coconut groves, and mangrove margins, offering a quieter and less-explored alternative to the more famous Dutch Canal. Small fishing boats still use the canal regularly, and the banks support a rich variety of waterbirds, including little cormorants, Indian rollers, kingfishers, and various species of heron and egret. The canal is traversable by kayak, bicycle along its banks, or by hired motorised boat, and it connects to broader lagoon systems that allow for multi-day paddle routes. The Hamilton Canal is an understated gem of the Negombo area, offering authentic rural scenes with very few tourists.
