Mihintale Rock Temple

Overview

Mihintale Rock Temple is the summit temple complex of the sacred mountain where Buddhism first arrived in Sri Lanka in 247 BCE — the rock-cut shrines, dagobas, and meditation spaces that crown the mountain above Anuradhapura form a sacred landscape that is the spiritual foundation of Sri Lankan civilisation. The complex spreads across three summits connected by stone steps, with the principal features including the Ambasthala Dagoba (marking the exact first meeting between Mahinda and King Tissa), the Maha Seya stupa at the highest point, and numerous meditation caves, inscription rocks, and lesser shrines that document 2,200 years of continuous religious activity. The mountain itself is a granite massif rising from the flat Rajarata plains, visible for miles, and the act of climbing its ancient steps at dawn — joining pilgrims who have been making this same ascent for over two thousand years — is one of the most spiritually resonant activities available in Sri Lanka.
