Overview
The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue is a monumental white seated Buddha figure crowning the highest hill visible from central Kandy, rising 26.8 metres above its hilltop and dominating the city’s skyline from virtually every angle. Built in 1972, the statue sits at an elevation of approximately 1,750 feet above sea level and is reached by a long flight of stone steps that wind up through a forest of Buddhist temple buildings, prayer flags, and smaller shrines. The climb is a devotional journey in itself — each step flanked by the sounds of prayers and the fragrance of incense from the temple buildings on the way up. Reaching the statue’s base reveals the finest panoramic view of Kandy city, Kandy Lake, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, and the surrounding mountains that can be obtained from any accessible viewpoint. At sunrise and sunset the colours across the city and valley are extraordinary. The temple complex at the hilltop is an active place of worship and meditation, adding spiritual depth to what is also one of the area’s finest photography destinations.
