Overview
Dunhinda Falls is the most spectacular and widely celebrated waterfall in the Badulla District — a thunderous single-drop cascade of approximately 64 metres that explodes from a narrow gorge into a wide, spray-filled plunge pool below. The approach to the falls requires a 1.5-kilometre walk through lush tropical forest along the Dunhinda Oya river, passing smaller rapids and pools before the roar of the main falls becomes audible through the trees. The name “Dunhinda” derives from the Sinhala word for “misty” — an accurate description of the perpetual spray cloud that envelops the viewing platform near the base, reducing visibility and soaking visitors on humid, high-flow days. The spray-drenched atmosphere is part of the appeal: standing before Dunhinda at full flow is a genuinely overwhelming sensory experience of sound, moisture, and visual drama that few waterfalls on the island can match.
