Overview
The edge grasslands of Horton Plains on the Uva Province side — reached via the Ohiya and Pattipola approaches — represent the plateau’s ecological boundary where the open montane grassland (patana) meets the descending cloud forest of the escarpment. These grassland edges are distinct from the well-managed World’s End trail experience and provide a rawer, less mediated encounter with the plateau’s extraordinary ecology. Sambar deer graze the open grass in the early morning, the highland grassland birds — including the Sri Lanka bush warbler and Pied bushchat — are active across the open patana, and the views from the grassland edge looking down the Uva escarpment are exceptional. The complete absence of tourist infrastructure and fellow visitors transforms the Horton Plains experience into genuine highland wilderness.
