Overview
Parey Dewa (sometimes written Paravi Duwa, meaning “Pigeon Island”) is a beautiful small Buddhist temple built on a tiny rock island just off the Matara seafront, connected to the mainland by a narrow footbridge that arcs above the crashing Indian Ocean waves. The temple complex on the island is modest in scale but extraordinary in setting — surrounded by the sea on all sides, with the sound of waves below and the Matara skyline behind, the island temple creates a sense of spiritual isolation within sight of a busy port town. The main shrine houses a seated Buddha statue, and the white-painted buildings glow brilliantly against the blue sea and sky. The bridge approach is genuinely dramatic, particularly when ocean swells are running and spray rises around the walkway. Poya days draw significant numbers of pilgrims from Matara and surrounding areas, creating a colourful procession along the bridge.
