Overview
Wadduwa Lagoon is a small but ecologically rich coastal lagoon located behind Wadduwa Beach, separated from the Indian Ocean by a narrow sandbar and connected to the sea through a narrow tidal channel. The lagoon is surrounded by mangrove vegetation, reed beds, and open water with shallow mudflats that provide an important feeding habitat for wading birds and waterbirds during both the resident and migratory seasons. Traditional fishing by local communities is still practiced on the lagoon using cast nets and bamboo fish traps, creating a picturesque scene in the early morning light. The lagoon also provides a calm environment for kayaking and small boat exploration. While Wadduwa Lagoon is modest in size compared to the great lagoons of the western coast, it has genuine charm as an unpretentious, accessible natural area where birds and people coexist in a quiet corner of the coastal landscape.
