Overview
The Kukule Ganga Reservoir is a large hydropower reservoir created by the Kukule Ganga Dam in the Ratnapura District, its deep blue waters set dramatically within the forested hills above the lowland gem fields. The reservoir is fed by the Kukule Ganga river draining the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, and its clear highland water reflects the surrounding forested ridges in a setting of considerable scenic beauty. The reservoir is not a standard tourist destination but provides excellent waterbird habitat and the surrounding forested roads reveal wildlife and highland forest birds as you approach. The dam itself is an impressive infrastructure project, and the view from the dam wall across the reservoir toward the Peak Wilderness backdrop creates one of the finest highland water-and-mountain compositions accessible in the Ratnapura District.
