Overview
The coastal wetlands around Talawila — the area of the famous St. Anne’s Catholic pilgrimage church on the Kalpitiya coastal belt — form part of the ecological habitat connecting the Puttalam Lagoon with the open coast. The wetland margins of the Talawila area support waterbirds including egrets, herons, and waders, and the mangrove sections of the tidal creeks provide dense habitat for kingfishers and specialist coastal species. The combination of the sacred pilgrimage site with the natural wetland ecology creates a uniquely layered destination for both spiritual and nature visitors.
