Overview
Lover’s Leap is a slender, elegant waterfall cascading down a rocky face within a working tea estate in the hills above Nuwara Eliya, taking its romantically melancholic name from a local legend involving a Tamil tea estate worker and his forbidden love. The falls drop approximately 30 metres through a narrow cleft in the hillside, framed on either side by green tea bushes and forest vegetation. The approach walk through the tea estate is itself a pleasure, with the highland air, the scent of fresh tea leaf, and the sound of the waterfall growing as you approach. The falls are most impressive after rain — the monsoon months and the inter-monsoon periods bring the cascade to its full dramatic expression. The legend attached to the falls — of a young couple who chose to jump rather than face separation — adds a poignant dimension to what is already a beautiful natural scene. The location within an active tea estate means the setting combines natural waterfall beauty with the working agricultural landscape of the highlands.
